Nine Yogis (Nava Yogis) consecrated nine idols here; the 9th idol (Navamukunda) stands knee-deep in the earth on the banks of Bharathapuzha.

According to the Sthala Puranam and ancient Sri Vaishnava Agamas, Divya Desam #87 (Thirunavaya (Navamukunda Temple)) is revered as a sacred kshetram in Malai Nadu. The presiding deity, Lord Navamukunda Perumal (Narayanan), graces devotees in Ninra (Standing from Knee Up) posture facing East beneath the sacred Veda Vimanam, accompanied by Goddess Malarmangai Nachiyar. Holy dips or prostrations near the Bharathapuzha River, Sengamala Pushkarani are believed to bestow peace, prosperity, and Moksha. Throughout the centuries, Chola, Pandya, Pallava, and Vijayanagara rulers contributed मंडपम्स (mandapams), gopurams, and stone inscriptions preserving the daily Pancharatra / Vaikhanasa Agama worship.
